Our food is formulated by a veterinary nutritionist and a team of experts. Veterinary nutritionists have the training and expertise to advise on all areas of a pet’s nutrition, including their metabolism, balancing their diet and treatment of nutrition-based health conditions. Veterinary nutritionists differ from regular university educated veterinarians as the latter receive only very little formal training on nutrition. Usually, veterinary nutritionists and veterinarians collaborate in close cooperation with one another.

All our products, including our recyclable packaging, are made in Europe, never more than a few 100 kilometers from our HQ in Antwerp, Belgium. We’re strong advocates of local sourcing as this is less harmful for the environment and guarantees a more stable product supply.

If your pet is on a well-balanced commercial diet: good quality pet foods do a good job of providing balanced nutrition, but certain animals could lack nutrients based on their medical condition, age, or breed. Supplements can help bridge the gap and help promote better health. While not all dogs and cats require a supplement to ensure that they receive balanced nutrition, for certain health concerns, extra support will aid overall wellbeing. Examples include joint and mobility, digestive health, skin and coat, immune support, or urinary care.

If your pet is on a raw or home-cooked diet: In this case, supplements are recommended as there is a risk that the diet is not balanced to the cat’s or dog’s specific needs. This could lead to health issues in the long term. Supplements are in this situation important to ensure that all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals are perfectly balanced.

If your pet is on a special diet, which states basic supplements in the food:

  • The benefit of adding additional supplements will depend on the amount of nutrients in the food. Usually, the specified nutrients added to the kibble are not absorbed at the amounts stated because of the cooking and preservation processes. Many (functional) nutritional ingredients are sensitive to the heating, pressure, acid, and moisture levels that they experience during the processing of the foods. Unless they have been encapsulated during the processing, they are best added on top of the food rather than including them in the formula.

  • If you’re concerned about overdosing, we recommend starting at a small amount and slowly increasing from there. If your pet’s stool becomes loose, then they’re likely getting too much. Otherwise, it is safe to feed together.

        •

It is always good to check with your veterinarian or animal nutritionist before starting any supplements to ensure that they are suitable for your pet.

A functional treat is an alternative to traditional treat. Next to its normal function as a reward to pets, it contains limited quantities of nutrients that address specific health concerns of pets. A functional treat contains significantly lower amounts of active ingredients than supplements. It is given to support a pet’s everyday health. Unlike a supplement, there are usually no daily feeding instructions other than the ones that a normal treat would have, essentially not giving more than 10% of a pet’s daily caloric intake.

Pet supplements provide additional necessary nutrients, such as minerals, vitamins, trace elements, or a combination of all. Supplements come with high amounts of active ingredients and complement your pet’s regular food. They support with the prevention and care of specific ailments such as hip & joint care, skin & coat health, problems with the immune system or urinary tract. Typically, supplements come in a powder, liquid, chewable, or pill form, which can be taken alone or added to your pet’s food. Treatsy’s supplements are different as they come as a delicious snack, making them much easier to administer to pets.

It takes a few weeks of feeding supplements daily to come into effect. Feed the supplements regularly and continuously for maximum efficacy. Note that you shouldn’t rely on supplements alone to cure your pet’s health problems. They are not a replacement for regular veterinary care.

We advise owners to wait until their pet reaches four months of age before giving our chews to their dog or cat.

We recommend giving your dog Treatsy Allergy chews. These are specifically formulated for dogs with food intolerances and general allergies. The product is based on a unique source of alternative protein (insects) to reduce the risk of allergic reactions. It contains probiotics to support digestive comfort, l-glutamine and uncaria tomentosa that reinforce the immune system as well as omega-3 and GLA that boost skin health.

We recommend always contacting your veterinarian in case you want to administer supplements to pregnant pets, but in general, our supplements are safe to use in pregnant or nursing dogs and cats. During pregnancy, pets will require increased levels of certain vitamins nutrients. Antioxidants, probiotics, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals could benefit both the mother and pup or kitten.

No, dosages and ingredients will be different for animals. Furthermore, certain ingredients used in human supplements are toxic to animals. You should never give your cat or dog human supplements, as these can cause permanent damage. In case your pet accidentally consumes a human supplement, we recommend to immediately contact a veterinarian. The right treatment might depend on the pet’s size and age.

Many Treatsy users see significant improvements in their pet’s quality of life, but supplements are not intended to replace the advice of your veterinarian. While most food-based supplements are safe to use with many medications, you should always consult with your veterinarian before making any changes to a prescribed medication routine or when using supplements and medications together.

If your pet has eaten more than the recommended dosage of our supplements and is experiencing adverse effects, please read the following recommendations:

  • Inform your veterinarian.
  • Induce vomiting if the overdose has occurred within 12 hours. Consult with your veterinarian on how to proceed.
  • Watch closely for the next 24 hours for any side effects such as diarrhoea, vomiting, weakness, seizures, etc.
  • Stop usage for one week.

Except for oils formulated for both dogs and cats, Treatsy offers two distinctive lines of treats, one for cats and one for dogs. Both are specifically formulated for the pet type. Dog treats supplements should not be administered to cats and vice versa.

While both Omega 3 and Omega 6 are key, optimal health is positively impacted by striking the right ratio of Omega 3’s to Omega 6. Too much Omega 6 and too little Omega 3 can lead to several health problems for your dog or cat, as excess Omega 6 can cause issues such as itchy skin, dandruff, and other types of inflammation. Extensive research in the United States by the National Research Councel (NRC) resulted in a recommended ratio omega 6 to omega 3 of 2,6:1 to 26:1, and the ideal ratio is around 6:1 or 7:1. The majority of commercial pet foods contain ratios above 20:1. Indeed, for technical and economic reasons, industries mainly use grains and vegetables highly concentrated in Omega 6 to formulate their recipes. Consequently, it is difficult to add Omega 3 by incorporating it in the industrial food: too much oil would make the kibble too greasy or too fragile.

Furthermore, it is important to understand that many functional ingredients are sensitive to the heating, acid and moisture levels that is experienced during the processing of the foods, especially Omega 3 fatty acids. Thus, even if they have been incorporated into the manufacturing process, Omega 3 loses a large part of its effectiveness during the extrusion of the kibble. Unless if they have been encapsulated during the processing, Omega 3 is much more effective when added on top of the food rather than including them directly in the formula. This explains why incorporating Omega 3 in its natural state, therefore in the form of oil, into your pet’s diet is so beneficial for his health.

Yes, our packaging is 100% recyclable. Our products are packaged in tinplate, which is the most recycled packaging material to date in the EU. Furthermore, the quality of tinplate doesn’t degrade once recycled (unlike plastic), which makes that it can be used in perpetuity.

At Treatsy, we have the experience and knowledge that allows us to do everything technically and scientifically to create effective complementary foods.

First of all, we selected ingredients whose beneficial effects on animal health have been proven by science. If you would like to know more and know the scientific studies on which the Treatsy team relied, contact us.

On the other hand, we have selected ingredients based on experience. Certain functional ingredients have been used for years in veterinary medicine, and although science has never proven their effectiveness, owners and veterinarians have seen beneficial effects on the health of dogs and cats.

Finally, we use manufacturing processes that we master and which guarantee the preservation of the nutritional quality of our products. For example, the probiotics that we use in our Probiotics, All in 1 and Allergy formulas are microencapsulated to guarantee their effectiveness.
Furthermore, all our solutions in the form of treats are cooked at low temperature to limit the risk of degradation of heat-sensitive nutrients. This allows them to be preserved in their integrity and to guarantee that their beneficial effects on the health of dogs and cats are not altered.

Our products do not require refrigeration, but should be stored in a cool, dry place.

Treatsy supplements come with 18 months shelf life. After this, the effectiveness of the supplement will reduce.

Treatsy oils come with 24 months shelf life.

Treatsy food supplements in the form of chews have been formulated by experts and a veterinary nutritionist in very precise ways.

  • Each supplement has a different formula that meets a specific need of the animal. All our supplements contain a high concentration of active ingredients which differ depending on the formula. The latter are incorporated into a treat made from meat or fish combined with other ingredients, sometimes themselves functional. For example, we use cranberry in some of our cat food supplements, in order to enrich the antioxidant intake and promote the fight against free radicals. In addition to the active ingredient specific to each recipe, we also sometimes include fish oils in order to bring Omega 3.
  • All the active ingredients have scientifically proven benefits for animal health.

Treatsy functional oils are made from a blend of 100% natural oils. All our formulas contain fish oil caught in Iceland and are of the highest quality. It is rich in Omega-3, EPA and DHA, which provides multiple benefits to your pet’s health. It forms the basis of our Treatsy oils.

Depending on the Treatsy product, the formula changes: fish oil is combined with other high-quality, 100% natural oils to provide your dog or cat with the nutrients it needs. For example, our Treatsy Immunity Oil contains fish oil combined with:

  • hemp oil, for its soothing and pain-relieving properties
  • curcuma oil, for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
  • linseed oil, for its high concentration of Omega-3 and low Omega-6
  • evening primrose oil, which helps relieve itching, skin irritation and reduce hair loss
  • and finally, echinacea oil, for its immunostimulating properties

If you don’t give any other food supplements than Treatsy, there is little chance that your dog or cat will ingest too much of certain nutrients. But everything depends on their daily diet, their activity, their lifestyle or even their physiological status.

In any case, before administering a dietary supplement to your dog or cat, we recommend that you discuss it with your veterinarian.

In general, food supplements do not require implementing a food transition. However, if your dog or cat is sensitive to food changes, we recommend starting with a small amount the first few days, and gradually increasing over the days.
